Lightning protection on yachts is aimed specifically at owners and skippers of sailing yachts. Storms are increasing in number and severity, which also increases the likelihood of lightning strikes. With their masts, yachts are a real challenge for lightning strikes and if there is no lightning protection, the damage can easily exceed the value of the ship. Michael Herrmann shows what measures owners and shipyards can take to protect the ship and crew from the effects of this force of nature. From external lightning protection, which is designed to prevent lightning from causing damage to the rigging and hull, to internal lightning protection and the protection of equipment and systems, all measures are described that can be used to prevent capital damage. Particular attention is paid to potential equalisation and - last but not least - protection against the effects of lightning strikes in the vicinity of the yacht.
