The intended use (drinking water/pressurized water, bilge, gray/black water), flow rate (L/min), head, power consumption, and voltage (12/24 V). For bilge/wastewater, contamination tolerance and robust construction are also important; for fresh water, hygiene/drinking water suitability and quiet operation are often more important.

The key factors are inner diameter (fits the fitting), outer diameter (fits the clamp), bend radius, and pressure/vacuum resistance. Important: Do not confuse drinking water hoses with sanitary/wastewater hoses—the material and odor resistance differ significantly.

For fresh water, only components intended for drinking water should be used (hose type, seals, fittings). This reduces taste and odor problems, minimizes biofilm, and prevents material leaching—especially at warm temperatures and during extended periods of inactivity.

It is important to use odor-tight sanitary hoses, ensure clean hose routing without “loops” (no standing water), maintain tight connections, flush regularly, and use appropriate sanitary additives/cleaners. If odors persist despite proper maintenance, aged hoses are often the cause—in which case replacement is usually the only solution.

For tank and line cleaning, odor reduction, and system maintenance. There are products specifically for fresh water (cleaning/disinfection), for toilets/sanitary systems (odor/biofilm), and for wastewater/bilge. Important: Follow dosage and application guidelines—not every product is suitable for every system.

Typical wear parts include gaskets, valves (e.g., check valve/Joker valve depending on the system), pump parts, gasket sets, and, if necessary, seats/lids. The quickest way to find the right part is via the model number, exploded view, or a photo of the nameplate.

Because these components secure through-hull fittings. Material quality, professional installation, appropriate sealants, and regular functional checks (moving the parts, checking for leaks) are essential to prevent leaks and consequential damage.

Warning signs include cracks, brittleness, soft spots, leaks, corrosion on clamps, loose connections, or odors (typical with sanitary hoses). For older systems, a preventive replacement is often more cost-effective than troubleshooting under pressure.

Simpler tasks (replacing a hose section, renewing clamps, servicing the pump head, replacing toilet wear parts) are often easily manageable. For seacocks/through-hull fittings, major modifications, electrical installation (12/24 V), or when watertightness is critical to safety, a specialist company should perform the installation or at least inspect it.
