For most recreational boats, a handheld anemometer is the practical choice: quick measurements, even while on the move in the cockpit or during harbor maneuvers. If you primarily make sailing decisions (reefing, anchoring, entering a harbor), good readability and a max/gust display are helpful. Those who train or instruct regularly benefit from stable repeat measurements and easy operation.
Important factors include the measurement range (suitable for your sailing area), units (e.g., knots), readability in sunlight, and resistance to splash water and impacts. Useful features include max/gust readings, average readings, and, if applicable, a hold function. For on-board use, the following are also important: a secure grip, one-handed operation, and a design that won’t immediately go “overboard” (strap/eyelet).
With handheld weather instruments, it’s less about system compatibility and more about practical compatibility: compatible battery types, accessories like a pouch or protective cap, mounting options (if needed, such as a lanyard), and user interface logic. If a device is intended to output data or be integrated into onboard electronics, interfaces would be relevant—but for typical handheld anemometers, standalone use is the primary focus.
For comparable readings, measure in an area with unobstructed airflow and not directly behind the sprayhood, sails, or superstructure. On a boat, turbulence, speed through the water, and shadowing affect the reading. For decision-making (reefing, anchoring), the gust/maximum value is often decisive. Therefore, use short measurement series and compare readings taken at similar positions.
Handheld devices do not need to be mounted. However, ensure they are stored securely: in a bag or box, with a lanyard, and in a fixed spot on board. If you store a device permanently outdoors, protect it from UV rays, salt, and moisture. Different mounting requirements apply to permanently installed solutions (separate wind sensors on the mast)—this category is primarily designed for handheld weather instruments.
After contact with salt/splash water: rinse with fresh water, wipe dry, and do not store while damp in a closed bag. Check the battery compartment occasionally (to prevent corrosion). Keep sensor areas clean. This ensures the display, buttons, and measuring mechanism remain fully functional.
First check the battery/voltage, take a measurement in an area with unobstructed airflow, and briefly compare it with a second reference (wind gauge at the harbor, weather app as a rough check). Often, the discrepancy is due to turbulence/shading or a weak battery. If readings remain incorrect: clean the device, replace the batteries, and follow the manufacturer’s service instructions if necessary.
