Everything mounted on the deck or protecting the hull or underwater propulsion system: anodes, blocks & tackles, cleats & clamps, hatches & accessories, as well as winches including cranks, maintenance parts, and spare parts.
As a general rule: Saltwater = often zinc or aluminum, brackish water = often aluminum, freshwater = often magnesium (sometimes also aluminum – depending on the system). The decisive factors are the sailing area, water conductivity, the material of the parts to be protected, and the manufacturer’s recommendation (e.g., Saildrive, propeller, shaft system).
When the anode is significantly worn down (rule of thumb: approx. 50–70% consumption), cracks or breaks are visible, or it becomes loose. Important: The contact surface must be bare and conductive—paint or antifouling between the anode and the metal significantly reduces the protective effect. For boats that are moored year-round and in demanding harbors, an interim check during the season is worthwhile.
Typical causes include lack of electrical contact, incorrect anode material, insulating layers (paint/antifouling/debris) on contact surfaces, or installation errors. “Hardly any wear” can mean that protection is limited—especially if pitting is already visible on the propeller, shaft, or through-hull fittings. In that case, the system (contact, bonding/grounding, shore power/stray currents) should be checked.
Based on application (sheet, halyard, trim), line diameter, installation location, and load. Ensure clean line routing without sharp bends, sufficient working load (WLL), and the appropriate attachment method (swivel, shackle, dogfoot, becket, etc.).
Lines that are too thick run stiffly and wear out faster; pulleys that are too small increase friction and kinking stress. The right combination of line thickness, pulley width, and pulley diameter determines operating forces, service life, and safety.

Seals, lifters, handles/locks, hinges, and, if applicable, acrylic panels are frequently affected. Leaks often result from aged seals, warped contact surfaces, corroded fittings, or UV/mechanical damage.
Check seals regularly and replace them as needed; adjust the locking mechanism correctly; keep frames and contact surfaces clean. When retrofitting, tension-free installation is crucial (no warping)—otherwise, seals and frames will leak over time.
At least once a year (during winter storage), more frequently with intensive use. Typical tasks: disassemble, clean (remove old grease/dirt), lubricate correctly (sparingly), check latches/springs and oil only (do not grease), replace wear parts in a timely manner.
Stiffness, jerky operation, unusual noises, pawl not engaging cleanly, or the drum seems “unsteady.” In such cases, maintenance kits (pawl/springs, bearings, stripper rings) are often the quickest and most cost-effective solution before further damage occurs.
Check the manufacturer, size/type, serial/part number, and, if applicable, year of manufacture/generation. For winches, the exact winch size helps; for hatches, the exact installation dimensions plus model; for blocks/clamps, the dimensions and connection types. A photo of the nameplate or the stamping usually makes the identification clear.
