Choose the form and quantity appropriate for the location and risk: pads and rolls for drip spots and surfaces, cushions for leaks under engines/filters, granules for walkways, gangways, and hard floors.
Oil binders are ideal for oil, diesel, and gasoline and work particularly well in the bilge or on water because they largely repel water. Chemical binders are the right choice when water-based media (e.g., coolant, cleaning chemicals) or mixed liquids may be present—typically in the engine compartment, in the workshop, or in storage. Many boat owners have both: oil binders for “oil/fuel,” chemical binders for “everything mixed.”
Pads are the all-rounder for small leaks and for laying out under filters or oil change points. Rolls are suitable for larger areas or as a “base” on workbenches and floors. Cushions absorb large amounts of liquid in specific spots (e.g., under the engine, transmission, or oil filter). Absorbent sausages/barriers help contain spills (e.g., around a leak or along the bilge edge). Granules are practical on hard, rough surfaces (dock, warehouse, yard)—on board, they’re usually only useful for specific cases due to dust and spread.
Bilge / Water: Oil-absorbent pads or wicks (water-repellent). Engine compartment: Pads/cushions under drip points, chemical-absorbent pads if coolant or cleaners are involved. Dock/workshop: Granules or rolls/pads for surfaces – depending on the surface and amount. It is always important to place the absorbent material so that it does not get into moving parts and is not sucked in or carried away.
If possible, stop the leak first (close the valve, check the hose, tighten the filter). Then apply or sprinkle the absorbent and allow sufficient time for it to absorb the liquid. For pads/cushions: do not just “place them on top,” but position them so that the absorbent is in contact with the liquid. For barriers/sausages: first contain the spill, then absorb the liquid. Afterward, remove contaminated material immediately and replenish as needed.
You can use different binders one after the other (e.g., contain first, then absorb). Mixing in the sense of “putting everything together in one bag” is often undesirable from a disposal standpoint: The absorbed medium determines how the waste must be treated. If, for example, fuel/oil and chemicals come into contact, disposal usually becomes more challenging. Practical tip: Collect separately whenever possible.
Depending on the absorbed substance, used absorbents are classified as oil-containing waste or chemically contaminated waste. Collect them in a sealed, suitable container or bag, label it, and dispose of it according to local regulations (recycling center, waste disposal company, port regulations). For fuel/oil: do not dispose of it in household trash unless explicitly permitted locally.
Store in a dry, clean, and splash-proof location (e.g., in a box in the engine room or storage area). Absorbents should be readily available in an emergency—ideally near the engine room or bilge, but stowed so they do not get wet or suffer mechanical damage. For granules: store in a tightly sealed container (avoid dust).
For everyday life on board, a set of pads plus 1–2 cushions for “heavier” drips is a good start. If you frequently work on the engine (oil changes, filters, bleeding) or take longer trips, supplement with rolls (sheets) and barriers/sausages (containment). The key factor is your risk: older engines/hose systems, long running times, and tight bilges call for more reserves.
