Greases & additives

Choose based on the application: For areas near water (e.g., outdoors on the drive, linkage, bearings), a water-resistant marine grease is recommended. For highly stressed screw connections/fittings, assembly pastes (e.g., Anti-Seize) may be considered depending on the application. For plastic/seal areas, you need a grease compatible with the material. Important: Not every grease is suitable for every application—contact with media (water/diesel/oil), temperature, and material are decisive factors.

As a general rule: only if explicitly compatible or approved. Different thickeners (e.g., lithium, calcium, aluminum complex) may or may not be compatible with each other. If in doubt: remove or clean out the old grease as much as possible and then re-lubricate with a suitable grease. This prevents flocculation, loss of consistency, and inadequate lubrication.

Additives can be useful depending on the system (e.g., diesel stabilization during long periods of inactivity, water binding/antibacterial agents for specific issues, corrosion protection in certain cases). However: only according to the manufacturer’s instructions and with the correct dosage. Modern engines and injection systems are sensitive to unsuitable additives. If warranties or approvals are relevant, always follow the approvals of the engine or additive manufacturer.

Greases: Clean contact surfaces (remove sand/salt), apply sparingly and precisely, wipe off excess (to prevent dirt buildup). For grease fittings: squeeze until old grease is completely displaced, then wipe off. Additives: dose according to the data sheet, ideally add before refueling (for thorough mixing), and adhere to intervals – “more is better” does not apply here.

Typical warning signs: unusual noises, stiffness, rapid wear, discoloration, washout by water, or grease that becomes “thin” very quickly or clumps. For additives: starting problems, rough running, or filter issues may indicate incorrect application or dosage. Stop use and check the cause (consult a specialist if necessary).

Store in a cool, dry, and frost-free place; seal containers tightly and protect from sunlight. Follow the safety data sheet and check the shelf life. Store cartridges/bottles so that nothing can leak. Store additives and chemical products out of reach of children and separate from food.

This category primarily includes lubricants and maintenance products for engines, transmissions, propulsion systems, steering/shift mechanisms, as well as additives for diesel/gasoline/oil (approved only). Products for hull/deck coatings or antifouling generally belong in separate sections (e.g., Paints/Maintenance) because their application and requirements differ.
