Steering & Shifting is a special category within Boats & Motors. Here we offer components for operating the propulsion system and rudder—from shift and throttle cables to steering cables and systems, as well as matching fittings, clamps, and accessories for safe, precise, and smooth control. Whether it’s a motorboat, a sailing yacht with an inboard diesel engine, or an outboard: a well-coordinated steering and shifting system increases operational safety, protects the propulsion system, and makes maneuvering in the harbor significantly more relaxed.

Our product range (subject to availability) includes Ultraflex (shift/throttle cables, steering components), Lewmar (including control mechanisms and bulkhead mounting solutions), Talamex (accessories and practical solutions), and Spinlock (depending on selection, e.g., deck accessories relevant to operation). Brand names remain unchanged—important for system compatibility, matching replacement parts, and the 1:1 replacement of existing components.

Select the model and dimensions to match the propulsion type (outboard, inboard, Z-drive), steering type (mechanical/hydraulic), routing path (bend radii, cable lengths), and installation environment (moisture, salt, vibration). This helps you avoid purchasing the wrong items and reduces failures caused by stiff cables, incorrect end fittings, or improper installation.

  • Check compatibility: Dimensions, end fittings/connection standard, stroke/switch travel, mounting dimensions, and mounting points must match the existing system.
  • Material & Protection: corrosion-resistant parts (e.g., A4 stainless steel/AISI 316), protected cable routes, abrasion protection, and clean sealing at cable entries.
  • Ease of use & safety: correct cable length without tight bends, play-free counterholders, correct neutral position/adjustment, and regular visual inspection.

Examples from the product range: Wire clamps/wire rope clamps (e.g., A4/V4A), accessories for secure fastening and routing; Lewmar switching mechanism with lever (bulkhead mounting) 89400109; depending on selection, additional components for control and switching systems.

FAQ

How do I determine the right model for steering and shifting components?

The correct model depends on the system type (e.g., Ultraflex control cable/shift cable, Lewmar control mechanism), the propulsion system (outboard, inboard, Z-drive), and the installation location (bulkhead, helm station, engine compartment). The decisive factors are installation dimensions, end fittings, stroke/switching travel, and cable length. The most reliable method is a 1:1 comparison using embossing/part number or photos of the end pieces and mounting points.

Which “compatibility” factors are particularly important?

For shift/throttle cables, these are end fittings, thread/articulation, stroke, and the correct length. For steering systems (mechanical/hydraulic), the connection standard, cylinder/pump/steering head compatibility, and permissible loads are key. Also important: routing path (bend radii), mounting/counterbrackets, and the installation situation on the engine/drive. Data sheets, nameplates, or cable markings usually provide the crucial information.

What are typical causes of stiff shifting or jerky steering?

Common causes include excessively tight bending radii, kinked or chafed cables, corrosion on end fittings, missing or loose counterholders, and incorrect adjustment (neutral position/shift travel). Water ingress into damaged sheaths can also cause cables to become permanently stiff. Remedy: Optimize routing, install chafing protection, check end fittings—and if damaged, it’s better to replace the cable.

Assembly/Installation: What to Look For?

Prepare the substrate cleanly, seal penetrations, protect cables against chafing, and secure them firmly (strain relief). Observe minimum bending radii; avoid kinks and “sharp” bends. Select screws/fasteners suitable for the environment (preferably A4/AISI 316 in saltwater) and perform functional and safety tests after installation (neutral position, travel, steering stop, free movement).

How can the system remain reliable in the long term?

Perform regular visual inspections (cable sheath, kinks, end fittings, fasteners), keep moving parts clean, rinse off salt, and replace worn parts promptly. For cable-operated steering: Check for smooth operation and do not “force” the system if it sticks. For hydraulic steering: Check for leaks, oil level, and hose condition. This ensures that operating comfort and safety are maintained over the long term.

When should I replace parts instead of “keeping on riding”?

If the shifter doesn’t engage cleanly in neutral or gear, the steering jerks, or operation becomes noticeably heavier, that’s a warning sign. Damaged cable housings, corrosion on end caps, or play in safety-critical parts should be addressed promptly—if in doubt, by replacing the affected components with identical ones.
