Choose the model and size to suit your boat, mooring location, and lines: When selecting mooring accessories, the most important factors are line diameter, working load, material compatibility (UV/salt/moisture), and the installation situation on board (cleat, bollard, thimble, railing). When chosen correctly, accessories reduce wear, protect fittings, and make maneuvers more predictable.

The most important criteria are line diameter, working load, and the installation situation. A shock absorber must match the diameter of your mooring lines and be sized so that it operates under load but does not run permanently “at the limit.” For chafing protection, the fit on cleats, railings, or edges is crucial. When in doubt, choose a size that allows sufficient slack for wind and swell.
For mooring accessories, “compatibility” is primarily mechanical: line diameter, cleat/bollard, drilling pattern/connections (if fittings are involved), and the possible routing of the line (cleat, deflection, railing). For brand-name or system components (e.g., from the Lewmar range), the exact series or variant is also relevant. A photo of the mounting point and the line thickness are usually sufficient to determine the right part.
Shock absorbers are particularly useful in swells, with shifting winds, in marinas with “work” being done on the dock, or with short mooring lines. They reduce impact loads, protect cleats, lines, and bollards, and improve comfort (less jerking/snapping). Shock absorbers can also significantly reduce peak loads on anchor lines or snubbers.
Install or integrate accessories so that they do not chafe, can move freely, and do not run along sharp edges. Shock absorbers are usually tied into or threaded through the line—make sure they fit correctly. For fixed attachments: use appropriate fasteners, prepare the surface properly, and check again after the first load (fit, knots, chafing protection position). Always use chafing protection for through-hull fittings.
Regularly inspect for cracks, hardening (UV/aging), abrasion marks, and loose parts. Rinse after contact with saltwater and allow to dry. Do not store rubber parts (e.g., EPDM shock absorbers) under maximum tension for extended periods. Replace wear parts early—this is more cost-effective than a torn line or damaged cleat.
Mooring lines that are too short without shock absorption, incorrect line routing over sharp edges, lack of chafing protection, shock absorbers that are too stiff or incorrectly sized, and constant “strain” on a single point. Optimize line lengths, use chafing protection where needed, and select accessories that are appropriate for your boat and mooring—this significantly extends their service life.
