Whether on inland waters, the coast, or on a cruise: the decisive factors are shape (long fenders, spherical fenders, bow fenders, buoys), size (boat length, freeboard, mooring conditions), and material quality (UV resistance, abrasion resistance, valve/inflation). Many fenders are available in common standard sizes and can therefore often be combined with existing accessories and mounting systems, as is common in the market with brands such as Lalizas, Danfender, Polyform, Seatec, Plastimo, Compass, or SVB. However, the decisive factors are always dimensions, valve type, and mounting—not the brand name.
The right size depends on the boat’s length, freeboard, and mooring conditions. On inland waters and in sheltered harbors, standard long fenders are often sufficient. In strong winds, swells, around dolphins/piles, or when chartering, larger diameters and additional fenders are advisable. Rule of thumb: better to have more contact surface and margin than to risk damage to the hull.
Long fenders are the universal standard at the dock (side protection). Ball fenders are ideal for posts/piles, locks, or when localized, high loads occur. Buoys are used as marker or mooring buoys (depending on the design) and should be designed for sufficient buoyancy and robust attachment. Many crews combine: long fenders for everyday use + spherical fenders as “special fenders.”
Many fenders from Majoni and Forsheda use common standard dimensions and can therefore often be combined with standard fender lines, baskets, and holders—as are also widely available from other suppliers on the market (e.g., Lalizas, Danfender, Polyform, Plastimo, Compass). The decisive factors are fender diameter/length, eye size, and line strength. When inflating, the valve type matters: Use the appropriate adapters or pump attachments for the specific valve.
Fenders should be elastic and absorb energy, but not “sag.” In practice, this means inflating them so that the fender still gives slightly when pressed by hand. Temperature changes (sun/cool water) significantly affect the pressure—so check briefly at the start of the season and after significant temperature changes. Excessive pressure can put unnecessary strain on the material and seams.
Choose the correct height (fender centered over the contact zone), avoid sharp edges on the dock, and use fender socks or protective covers if necessary. Regular rinsing reduces dirt abrasion. If fenders rub against rough pilings, ball fenders or additional protective layers are often the better solution.
Rinse with fresh water, remove dirt/salt, and store in a dry place. UV rays and heat stress the material: Do not store fenders fully inflated in the sun during winter. Check valves occasionally (for leaks, sand/dirt). Inspect buoys and fenders for cuts or abrasions after contact with sharp edges.
