Therefore, lines, fittings, shackles/connectors, and attachment points should not be selected “right at the limit”—a safety margin here is the key to preventing damage.
For fittings, corrosion-resistant materials are key: stainless steel (robust), anodized aluminum (lightweight), as well as galvanized steel (cost-effective and load-bearing, but maintenance-dependent), and UV-stable plastics for special applications. The combination is important: different metals can promote contact corrosion—therefore, choose material combinations carefully, separate them (insulation), and inspect them regularly.
Prepare the substrate properly (clean/degrease), use a suitable sealant, and distribute the load over a sufficient contact area. For high tensile forces, backing plates and proper load distribution are essential to prevent localized damage to the laminate. Tighten screws carefully and according to the manufacturer’s specifications; inspect after the first load cycle.
Fenders should protect without slipping: correct size (boat/freeboard), appropriate shape (long fenders, spherical fenders, bow fenders), and correct height (contact zone). For everyday use, fender lines, holders/baskets, and, if necessary, fender socks are helpful. As an “emergency” backup, a large round fender or a particularly bulky fender is often worth its weight in gold.
For harbor maneuvers, the boat hook must be long enough to retrieve lines or maintain distance, but also easy to stow. Telescopic boat hooks save space; a sturdy hook head is worth it for frequent use (mooring, buoys, dolphins). For larger yachts, a longer model is usually more convenient; for small boats, a more compact one is often sufficient.
There is no such thing as the perfect anchor for every situation. The decisive factors are seabed conditions (sand/silt/seaweed/rock), boat type, and intended use. The entire anchoring system is also important: anchor + chain/line + connector + attachment point/anchor roller + shock absorber/snubber if necessary. A good anchor is of little use if the chain, connectors, or attachment points are too weak or improperly installed.
Common issues include undersized equipment, incorrect line types, poor line routing (chafing points), lack of chafing protection, overly rigid fastenings without shock absorption, and fittings that operate under fluctuating loads and become loose. Protection against swell is also often missing: without a snubber or give, the boat jerks more violently—which puts strain on fittings, cleats, and lines.
Snubbers, elastic mooring lines, or properly used running lines help against shock loads. Chafing protection, clean cleat/edge routing, suitable cleats, and sufficient line length help against chafing. The goal is to reduce peak loads and prevent abrasion—this significantly increases safety and comfort.
